The Ten Percent Portrait Project
The Ten Percent. We are the faces and names of the female and non-binary DJs, emcees and producers in Calgary. It is 2017, and a lot has changed in the music industry since electronic music has become a multibillion-dollar global industry. Yet, according to the Women in Music Professional Association of Canada, less than 10% of the top music executives in our country are women. The wage gap between women and men at almost every level of the industry is far greater than 10%, and many festival lineups contain less than 10% of female talent despite the rising awareness of inequality within our community. These stats, coupled with gender-based technological stereotypes, sexual harassment, and an often-tumultuous lifestyle, make it logical why women would shy away from an industry that doesn’t support them.
